“Play and write music the way you wish the world to be.” - Wayne Shorter

Humans evolve and change over time, from learning to walk, to awkward puberty phases, and eventually growing into adults and discovering our contribution to the world. Music, to me, reflects life, and songs evolve over time. 'Alive' is an organic exploration of the essence of these songs I’ve written, explored by 3 human beings. These recordings are all first takes, no rehearsal, all group improvisation with little directions.

Inspired by Wayne Shorter’s zero gravity concept (as heard on my first EP, 'Peace in Pieces'), I brought the “DNA” or what I considered to be main themes of each of these songs, with the instructions of starting from anywhere. The result was a living and breathing improvisation, exploring new territories and interpretations of this music. Each of these songs have been previously released before, and these recordings are drastically different than the original versions.

To challenge myself even further - I played a baritone guitar on this recording in lieu of a bass player. This allowed me to occupy more of the low end, playing lush chords, and ultimately disrupted my technical facility on the guitar, forcing me to play with intention and creating in the moment rather than rely or fall back on my usual devices.

This music was captured and brought to life by Michael Matsakis, who added in nature sounds and intricate effects that breathed with the music.
